Charles Lee

After receiving a medical degree in China, Dr. Charles Lee came to the United States, and began his graduate studies in 1991 on a full scholarship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Graduating in 1995 with a Masters degree in Physiology, he then went to Harvard to do research. He was living in Menlo Park, California where he managed his own business before he made his courageous trip to China. Charles went to China to expose the horrible human rights violations suffered by Falun Gong practitioners in China. He is currently the victim of those same violations.

On January 22, 2003 Dr. Lee landed in southern China. In the airport, Chinese police pounced on him, beat him and dragged him away to detention. A one-day trial was held for him following his unlawful capture but he was not even able to defend himself. He was then sentenced to three years in Nanjing Prison. They charged him with attempting to sabotage Chinese broadcast systems.

Dr. Lee has always been open about the purpose of his trip. He intended to override cable broadcast signals to air a counter-narrative to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) line. Instead of state-run propaganda demonizing Falun Gong, Dr. Lee wanted to show evidence of the horrendous persecution in China as well as how Falun Gong is freely and peacefully practiced around the world, which is the truth hidden from the Chinese people.

In June 2003, a letter written by Dr. Lee revealed that from the moment of his arrest he had been beaten, force-fed and tortured, including being handcuffed in painful positions for days, tied to a board with his limbs painfully outstretched for long-periods of time, being deprived of sleep, and beaten on countless occasions. In addition, on a daily basis Dr. Lee was forced to attend “reeducation” sessions where he was made to sit completely still and stare at propaganda videos for several hours. Dr. Lee was "forced fed" through the nose with a rigid plastic tube, which was then left inside him for 33 hours, causing him excruciating pain. All of this was because Dr. Lee risked his life to go to China to peacefully expose the CCP's brutal persecution of Falun Gong.
