8 . Hammock - Blanket of the Night
A great ambient work needs to be able to transport the listener to another location, be it physical or spiritual. From the onset, "Blanket of the Night" hooks into the listener with the sounds of crickets chirping, and almost instantly the audience is teleported to middle America where it has the opportunity to stargaze under Hammock's utterly gorgeous sky (music). The band has never been shy about the motives or intentions of its music, and this blunt honesty is perhaps what makes its music so intriguing. "Blanket of the Night" is written like a how-to guide for affective ambience, careening across the sonic landscape without a care in the world and guiding the listener on a one-of-a-kind experience. This might have been created in humble Tennessee, but Hammock's scope and influence has always extended greatly outside its local borders. (Jordan Volz)
