that swing shift life really took its toll
his hair turned grey now hes gettin' old
n' just when it look like he might catch a break
after 37 years the plant closed down
packed up all the gear and
n' they moved outta town
n' everybody’s future just seemed to fade away

Тед попал на завод — как и его отец.
Он вырастил двоих детей,
посылал их в школу, хотя знал, что они считают его глупым.
И он не переставал трудиться — и они превратились в успешных людей.

Жизнь на вечернем дежурстве довела его до старости,
волосы поседели, он уже не молодой.
И когда всё наконец показалось бы хорошо…
завод закрылся на 37-й год работы,
и они переехали из города.

Американский сон
не был таким, каким казался.
Но я думаю, лучше всё же иметь мечту.

Я продолжаю верить, что однажды все изменится,
что ждут нас лучшие времена.
Но если подумать, как мы далеки от идеала…
В глубине души я понимаю — всё в порядке.

Теперь сидим под железной дорогой,
с четвертью Джека Даниэля на столе и отдыхаем.
Думаем о том, как могла сложиться наша жизнь…
Я не такой человек, чтобы плакаться.
Но если посмотреть вокруг — стыдно за это.

Я продал душу рок-н-роллу,
бросил школу и поехал на большие дороги.
При этом не получив возможности обосноваться…
пока не встретил женщину похожую на меня.
А остальное — как говорится, это история.
